Will the tamron d171 af 18-200 work properly on the Nikon d3100?
I'm not familiar with the Tamron D171 but there are two important issues to consider here.
First, Tamron makes lenses for different camera brands. When you buy a lens, make sure you are getting one with a Nikon mount to make sure it will fit your D3100.
Second, your camera does not autofocus with all AF lenses. If you rely on AF to focus, make sure the lens you are buying has its own internal focus motor. Tamron's first version of the 18-200mm did not have an internal focus motor nor an anti-shake feature. Subsequent models already did (I think). When in doubt, ask the seller if the lens you are getting specifically autofocuses with the D3100.
If it has a Nikon mount, but the autofocus may not work.
If you go to Tamron's website and read the technical specifications for the lens, you will see that it has an AF motor built in. Therefore if you buy the 18-200 with a Nikon lens mount, it will work perfectly with your D3xxx camera.

The tamron 171D is a 28-200mm, not 18-200. This lens is more than 20 years old. It is also an Adaptall series lens which means you need to find the F-mount Adaptall converter (probably someone on ebay is selling one). Since it uses the Adaptall system this means the lens will not auto-focus with your camera and you may need to manually set the aperture (not sure about aperture aspect). I would avoid this lens unless you don't mind manually focusing. If you are serious about photography, get the Nikon 18-200 or 18-140 lens. These lenses are very good for a wide range zoom.
The d3100 does not have a screw(the motor that autofocus's old lenses without a built in motor).therefore it only operates as a manually focused lens.
