Nikon SLR Cameras

Which DSLR would work best for me?

Right now, I have a Nikon D5000. I really wanted a camera that could record videos as well, which is why I got it. But it has a few flaws. The sound quality isn't that good, so I wanted to plug in an external mic, but found out I couldn't. So what camera would I upgrade to?

What I would like in a camera:
Either Nikon or Canon
Can record longer than 5 minutes
10 MP or over
can plug in an external mic
and umm… Yeah.

recommendations please! Try to keep them in the $500-$800 only range. Please. No cameras over $1000. I'm a college student D

I highly recommend the Canon EOS Rebel T3 12.2 MP CMOS Digital SLR with 18-55mm IS II Lens and EOS HD Movie Mode. It is currently on number 1 in the top 100 DSLRs on amazon. It fulfills all your requirements, has great results and is in your price range. Some of its features are:

-12.2 MP CMOS sensor and DIGIC 4 Image Processor for high image quality and speed.
-ISO 100 - 6400 for shooting from bright to dim light.
-Improved EOS HD Movie mode with expanded recording and with in-camera video editing options.
-High speed, reliable 9-point AF system utilizing a high precision, f/5.6 cross-type center point.
-Enhanced metering with a 63-zone, Dual-layer metering system for accurate metering between exposures.

Why bother getting two dSLRs to make movies? It makes more sense to get a video camera instead.

To properly answer your question, I would suggest a Canon T2i; It is proven to have better movie quality over Nikon with 1080p at 24fps which is a highly sought after format, it can also do 30 and 60fps, the record time depends on how fast your card is but its max is 30min. It has an external mic jack and it's under $700 for the kit which leaves you with plenty of room for a really nice mic so you don't have to go through all that trouble of recording sound separately and all the software pain in the but.

EDIT: Although the T3 is slightly cheaper, the movie mode is FAR worse, only capable of shooting 720p over 1080p with the T2i and the T3 only shoots MONO sound with NO external mic support, which is the whole reason you asked this question. And the T2i is 18MP with more features and better image quality over the T3.
