You need lenses for a cropped frame sensor - look for DX not FX lenses. Any F-mount (Nikon) lens will fit, but you'll miss out on certain features if you use an FX lens on a DX body

Nikon makes two excellent lenses for this camera. I have one myself and use a 18 to 55 mm for close up photography and a 70 to 300mm for everything else. You will need both. But buy the 70 to 300 first if it nature you are going to be shooting.

Nikon mount DX or FX AF lenses. Ideally buy lenses with DX mount for that camera so that full functionality is retained. Don't forget you can also use 3rd party lenses like Sigma, Tamron and Tokina etc if they are in Nikon DX mount.

Look online for a refurbished 18-55mm. It's a great lens to start.
Make sure it's a Nikkor lens!

READ your camera's Instructions Manual; it provides you with all the information you need to determine what lenses it accepts. You'll also be able to read suggestions and recommendations on the features your camera provides for your photo shooting experiences for better exposures; you'll learn what features, functions and options are available and WHERE to locate them. Learning involves reading, and chances are you won't get the most out of your camera if you don't read to find out what they are, when and how to use them.

Go to the following URL and read the information on compatible lenses for your camera

Your camera takes in lenses with the Nikon F-mount. Beware though, there are a few F-mount wide angle and fisheye lenses that protrude too far into the camera body and get in the way of the reflex mirror.

Since Nikon hasn't changed its mount when they jumped from film to digital, you won't hear much about the F-mount these days. All you will see is Nikon mount and they can be divided into the following:

Pre-AI: won't mount
AI: will attach and work but no meter
AF and AF-D: no problem whatsoever
AF-S and AF-I: no problem whatsoever
AF-P: won't work

If the lens that your dad bought has its own mount and if that mount is for Nikon then it would most probably mount your camera. If the lens has a screw thread on the rear end then (it's an add-on and) it goes to the front of the lens already attached to the camera. If the thread is too big or too small then don't force the issue. You might just damage your lens. Have it replaced with the right size (52mm).

Nikon mount DX or FX AF focal points. In a perfect world purchase focal points with DX mount for that camera so full usefulness is held. Remember you can likewise utilize outsider focal points like Sigma, Tamron and Tokina and so forth on the off chance that they are in Nikon DX mount.

Read the information in the connection.
