Nikon D5000 won't charge or turn on?

So I have a nikon d5000. I love this camera and I've had it for about a year and a half, maybe two years now. I haven't used it in quite a few months though. I put it away in one of my bedroom drawers when the battery was drained out because I couldn't find the charger so I didn't have any use for it at that point. But I just recently cleaned out my room and found the wall charger and the camera again. I left it on the charger overnight and it won't turn on and the light on it isn't blinking or anything when it's attached to the charger… What can I do to get it to turn on/charge?

Thank you so much! I don't wanna have to get rid of this camera, it was expensive and I really love it.

You can't charge a D5000 (or any dslr) from the charger. Instead, you need to remove the battery and charge it in the provided external battery charger.

If you did, and the battery won't charge, then you simply need to replace it. Rechargeable batteries have a limited lifespan, and the fact that it wasn't cycled for several months may have shortened it.

Really the only way you can kill a li-ion battery is to leave it discharged for a length of time (over 72 hours can do the trick).

If you charge them before putting them aside, they can last for at least a decade. I have an old D100 and its Li-ion batteries are still working just fine, then years later.

That said, when you insert the battery into the battery charger (MH-23 Quick Charger),. Does the light on the charger flash? If you leave the battery in the charger overnight, does the light on the charger stop flashing?
