If I Purchase a Nikon d5100 will my Nikkor AF lense work on it?
I currently have a nikon D80 and I have a Nikkor AF 70-300 mm lens that I use with it. I'm looking to upgrade my camera to a nikon d5100. Does the D5100 have the built in motor for auto focusing so that my AF lens will auto focus?
The D80 is an advanced consumer-class camera. The D5100 is mid-level consumer-class. You're only getting a new camera but slightly downgrading.
No, AF lens does not autofocus with the D5100. You need AF-S or AF-I lenses to preserve autofocus in the D5100. See why it's a downgrade?
Unfortunately it won't.unless you buy a new lens which has autofocus in it…
The Nikon D5100 requires the more expensive AF-S lenses if you want auto focus. If you can stretch your budget to a D90 or D7000 then you can use your AF lenses and they will auto focus thanks to the focusing motor in those bodies. Of course your AF lenses can be used on the D5100 as long as you don't mind manually focusing them.
