How to open raw (video) files from a nikon d3200?

My computer is really old and so are the software installed on it. I recently got the nikon d3200, which I absolutely love in case you are wondering.
Last thursday I filmed some videos with it and now I want to edit them on my computer.
The program I want to use is Pinnacle Studio 9 (yes, studio 9, I know), but it doesn't open them!
I already converted the files to.avi, but it still doesn't work!
Movie Maker also does not work, something about codecs or something.

Could you please help me out? I'm really frustrated over here!

How old is your computer?

You need a fast CPU (like at least an Intel i5) and 8 gb of RAM (16 gb would be better) if you want to process Full HD video.

If your computer is slower than that, you will have a problem editing and viewing the video your camera is capable of producing.

Windows 7 has Windows Live Movie Maker which is fully capable of viewing and editing the H.264/MPEG-4 (mov) video files produced by your fine D3200.

Some people forget that they have to update their computer every three years or so to keep up with the new technology found in modern cameras.

Hopefully, you're running XP or newer.

You should have installed the Nikon utility ViewNX2, which if you don't have it can be downloaded from the Nikon web site. That will help handle your movie files.

If you need codec updates, try here:

Sorry this is no way around the problem. HD video requires a speedy PC or Mac to not only play but edit. The file sizes for HD video are not only large, but the bit rate (data per second) is high so there's no solution if you have an older, slower computer, you will need to buy a new one with lots of RAM 4GB min, more is better, and a fast dual core processor. A good video card helps too.

If you don't want to use Windows Movie Maker and Pinnacle Studio, they can use AVS Video Editor for the Windows. It CAN edit mov on the fly. I believe it most render effects as you add them however so the editing processes is slower than Windows Movie Maker. It seems to me that it's really 6 of 1, half a dozen of another.
