Good DSLR for a second camera?

So I currently have a Nikon d3100 with 18-55 kit lens. I'm 18 and I'm going to uni in September to study photography. I've been thinking about getting a new dslr to replace mine as I've had it for two years.

Can anyone suggest a good one? Or any particular make? Or lenses to improve shots taken with my current Nikon?

Price range is up to £1000 but ideally around £6-700

If the reason for getting another one is just because yours is two years old, just get another D3100.

Unless your shutter count is running around 50, 000 there's no reason to replace the camera you have… None. Add lenses, not a bad idea but just to upgrade for the sake of upgrading doesn't make sense.

I would suggest that you get the Nikon D3200 as you primary camera and use your D3100 as your second camera.

As far as a lens to improve you shots, there's NO reason why you can't get amazing shots with the lens you have. All you have to do is learn how to balance the ISO, shutter speed and lens aperture to control your exposures and learn to compose brilliant, compelling shots.

Unless your D3100 is wearing out, or it doesn't have functions you want, then why replace it.
As for lenses, you get the lenses that are needed for the type of photography you are doing.
I bought a D80 in 2008, I have not found any need to replace it. I have however bought lenses and a flashgun to suit my needs.
I bought the Nikon AF-S VR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G IF-ED lens for wildlife and aircraft shots, it would also be useful for motorsports etc. I also bought the Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.8 G for portrait shots and for when I need a shallow depth of field.
Both these lenses are highly rated in reviews, and will work with all Nikon Dslrs. If they suit your needs then I can recommend them.
Since you are going to study photography at uni, then why not save your money for the moment. During your studies you will identify the equipment you need, then you will make more informed purchases.

Stick with your old camera and lens. They are good enough for college. You won't improve your shots with a new camera or lens. It's all about what you know. The camera and lens are only tools.

Save your money. You'll surely need it in college.

I would suggest the Nikon D5200. You can't notice a huge difference though. You 'd rather wait and buy the new Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 when it's available for amazing low light photos.

Two years is nothing.

You won't get better shots by buying a more expensive camera.

Get better glass instead - good fast primes or zooms. Here is a list, depending on your budget;

- 50mm f1.8
- 85mm f1.8
- 24-70mm f2.8
70-200mm f2.8

The most important things to do with image quality are (in this order);
1.skill & knowledge of the photographer
2. The lens
3. The camera body

Work on 1 & 2 first for a couple of years before you try 3.
