Can I fix my Nikon D50 err message?

I recentley went yarselling, and a guy was selling this camera for $250 with the different lenses and what not. I saved up for it and finally bought it yesterday and it was fine taking pictures and all that jolly stuff, today I wanted to change the lens and was having trouble doing it. I saw a tutorial (since it's used it didn't come with the manual) and I inserted the wider lens but when I took pictures they didn't record in the memory card and then i saw that it flasher "err" as soon as it's turned on. I put the lense it came with and the same thing is happening. Could it be i'm mounting the lenses wrong? Or maybe it needs to charge? It's my first time using a camera with a lense so if you could dumb down the answers that would be awesome. I did some research and people say to lock in the aperture ring. But I don't think my lenses have that. And it reads "err" not "fee".Is this a big deal or is it fixable? Or did I just get cheated out of $250?

I guess you did not get the user manual, is that right?

Call Nikon and ask them 800. NIKON-UX

It is too bad you did not test the camera before you spent the money.

It may be that the problem is with the shutter or shutter release.

Another thought. When a lens is off try gently cleaning, and I do mean gently, cleaning the lens contacts. If these are dirty the lens and camera can't talk and the camera won't work.

Lots of unknowns here. Get a manual, you will need it.

Sounds to me like there's a lens mount issue, either you messed something up or something is wrong. Make sure the lens is properly mounted. Check if the contacts are dirty.

I used to own a d50, contact me directly if you need more help.
