I'm plannig to buy a 18-300mm lenses. Is it compatible to my D3100 Nikon DSLR?

Any Nikon lens with "AF-S" in its name will work perfectly with your camera.

Note that this is distinct from those that merely say "AF". These wouldn't autofocus as they rely on an in-camera autofocus motor, which your camera does not have. You need "AF-S," this means that the autofocus motor is in the lens itself.

A lens like that is certainly compatible with your camera, but a lens design covering such a large range from a wide-angle start is stretching lens design to the utmost. You may get better definition from a lens with a less ambitious top end, such as 135mm or 200mm.

Yes, it is an AF-S lens, so it will focus on your camera.

Did you consider the Tamron 18-270mm PZD lens? It is nearly as long and a whole lot cheaper. It is my main lens on my Nikon D90, and it performs everything that I need.

If you wanted one lens to be a do all" lens then you should have purchased a "bridge" camera like the Canon Powershot SX50 IS. Are you prepared to carry this lens on camera all day long? I'm a 45yrs professional who bought a Tamron 18-200mm lens, what a dog optically, and what's more I needed a Chiropractor for my neck after a short time carrying the camera and this lens! My best solution is to divide up the optics. In my case the camera came with an 18-55mm lens and I added a 50-200mm lens, that turned out to be the perfect outfit as the the 50-200mm is about the same size & weight as the lens that came with the camera! I seriously would rethink a "do-all" lens!
