Can I use a smart phone to transfer pictures from a digital camera?

I usually travel with a laptop, but if I take pictures with my digital Nikon SLR can I plug it into a smart phone like an HTC Desire, transfer the pics from the SLR to the smartphone, edit them there and use the Smartphone to upload to a site like Flickr?

I don't think you can directly connect camera to phone but you will need to connect both to laptop and open both memory cards and transfer usual way from one folder to another.
