Buying spare battery for nikon J1 DSLR?

I have a new nikon J1 that I got around Christmas time - I love it but it's my first "real" camera. Only problem I have is the battery only lasts an hour or two. I'm going to a huge zoo soon and going to see some baby elephants up close so I need the camera to last almost the whole day, and thinking of buying some spare batteries so it can. On eBay they seem to sell for $10-$20 but they all come from Hong Kong, is it ok to use these cheap imports or won't they work in my australian camera? Also, could buying cheap imports ruin my camera? I can't even seem to find any official nikon batteries.

I would caution against buying cheap 3rd party batteries. Many cameras have fast chargers, and the battery must be designed to work properly with the charger.

If the battery is not 100% compatible, you risk damaging the battery, charger, or both. This issue is due to the quick-charge nature of the charger. Should you have an overnight charger, a 3rd party battery would probably be OK, but I would not want to chance damage from a fast charger.

In reality you are not saving that much money by buying a 3rd party battery of questionable quality and compatibility. Stick with the genuine battery.

Would they work with your camera? Yes and no, it depends. Would it ruin your camera? It's a risk you have to take when you buy third-party accessories. Go back to the store where you bought the J1. They should have extra batteries or at least tell you where to get one.

BTW, what you have is NOT a dSLR.
