Best course of action with a Ruger 10 22?
I was thinking of modding my 10 22 to.17 hm2 or getting the green mountain "stinger barrel with 1:18 twist" to shoot High vel ammo. What I'm tring to accomplish is firstly more accuracy, secondly more range. So my ultimate question is this, what is the overall best barrel and bolt combo to increase range and accuracy, assuming you have a great trigger (kidd) and scope (Nikon Prostaff BDC 150 Rimfire)?
Honestly, you're not going to get much more out of a 10/22, as you are limited by the capabilities of the.22 LR cartridge itself.
You can spend a boatload of money turning it into a "competition grade" 10/22, but at the end of the day, it's still going to be a.22 LR.
Upgrading to.17HMR makes it a very flat shooter, but lowering the grain weight of the projectile and increasing velocity does not necessarily increase range, as the lighter the projectile, the FASTER IT SHEDS VELOCITY.
Think of it as a simple equation: Barrel = accuracy, cartridge = range.
Work from there.
If you want accuracy, then spend your money on the barrel. If you want range, get a cartridge with that range.
Quit f*** up your 10/22 and get an AR-15 in.223 or 5.56x45 if you want faster, more accurate, and more range.
So, Lime Green is usually pretty good, but he's missed the mark a bit on the.17 HM2. You do get a reasonable extension on range because it is running a much better ballistic coefficient bullet, and while you have wind resistance chewing on you, because of the increase in velocity the smaller cross sectional area and improvement in the BC helps a surprising amount because they represent fractional multipliers in the wind resistance equation.
Anyway - the Green mountain barrels (which I will freely admit I have no experience with) claim to be heavy varminter type of barrels with match grade air bearing, etc.So, they will probably be more accurate than whatever stock stuff you have on your gun. I will say, that if you are going to go to a specialty barrel which is geared toward.22LR stingers, and likely will not shoot other.22 velocities and weights as well… I would probably be inclined to just run the conversion to 17. HM2 and be done with it. I mean if you are going to make your weapon a specialist weapon then I would probably not go half way.
