I have this sweet classic canon AE1 I have a few old lenses but I'm thinking about getting a dslr and I don't know if the lenses I have will fit it/if any new lenses would fit the AE1. I guess the question is did canon change their mounting system since the 70s?

No

It is too bad you bought an AE-1 instead of a Canon EOS 35 mm camera. Those cameras use all the Canon EF lenses and cost about the same as the obsolete AE-1 Canon cameras.

Probably not.

No.

The old lenses will not fit any dSLR. You can force it though with the use of an adapter but it's not worth the bother.

Yes, Canon changed their mount from the old manual FD (1971) to the autofocus EF/EOS (1987). EF-S lenses (the more common and cheaper digital versions) are suitable only for APS-C (crop sensor) dSLR's and will not completely fill a whole frame of 35mm film. With expensive EF lenses (that do fill up the film frame completely), as far as I know, there's no way to mount them on your old camera.

Canon and Nikon lenses from the film era do not fit the digital cameras (DSLR). Only Pentax lenses from Pentax film cameras fit Pentax digital single lens reflex cameras (DSLR). Mainly because the stabilization feature is built into the Pentax DSLR body not each lens as Canon & Nikon are. That is one of the main reasons I chose a Pentax system when I went to digital.

No. Your AE-1 uses the now obsolete FL or FD lenses. These are breech mount with fully mechanical connection to the camera. There are plenty available on the used market.
Modern Canons (since around 1987) use EF mount lenses. These are bayonet mount with electronic connection to the camera.

Even if you can find a mount to physically attach the lens to the camera you will be limited to full aperture only as EF mount lenses have no aperture control ring - aperture control is handled electronically by the camera body.

Unfortunately, the answer is no.

When Canon introduced their auto focus 35mm film cameras around 1988 they abandoned their FD/FL lens mount in favor of the EF lens mount. This mount is still used on their DSLR cameras.

To further confuse matters, to stay competitive in the entry-level DSLR market, Canon introduced the EF-S lens line. These lenses are only compatible with their crop sensor cameras. They can't be used on a Canon full frame DSLR nor on an older auto focus 35mm film camera.

However, there's a way to use your older Canon FD lenses on a DSLR. Its an adapter you can find here:

You'll also find adapters to allow use of Minolta, Olympus and Canon manual focus lenses on several other DSLR cameras as well as several mirror-less cameras.

Nikon has used the same lens mount since around 1959.

Pentax has used the same lens mount since 1975.

Actually, the answer is YES. They did change the mounts, so the old lenses won't fit on the new cameras. Suggest you keep the sweet AE1 and its lenses, and then plunge into digital with new lenses.
