I went to a photography beginners course and met a guy using a pentax k-30 while the crowd were all Nikon or Canon users. I googled it and found out it is kinda awesome and I'm thinking of buying one too like maybe a K-5 but why not many people are using it? Will the service like repairs be ok? How about lens and accessories avaibility esp third party?

Pentax makes excellent cameras.

The major problem is that the number of lens choices is low and if a person ever does go pro, there's no pro level Pentax available. Pentax is not supported by Lightroom "tethering" Nikon and Canon each have over 70 current lenses, Pentax, not so many and the sports shooter favorite lenses are just not available for Pentax cameras, like the 300 mm f/2.8, 400 mm f/2.8, 500 mm f/4 or 600 mm f/4

So, the bottom line is, if the Pentax lenses that are available are what you will need in your future shooting, the buy a Pentax

YOU are going to have to visit the Pentax, Nikon and Canon websites and get a better understanding of the lenses and accessories that are available before you choose the camera system you want to marry for the next couple of decades.

Because Canon and Nikon saturate the market.

Most people (beyond pros, of course) buy the big two because they can't count any higher.

There was a time when the sales of Pentax cameras were more than all other brands combined. Lots of people use Pentax. More use Canon and Nikon today though because they use aggressive marketing strategies. Pentax was never a good advertiser. Worse, Pentax users are almost always quite folks who prefer to go out there and take pictures instead of gathering together to show off their stuff.

Pentax is more recognized in Europe than the rest of the world but rest assured that if you got your Pentax from an authorized local distributor, you have someone to go back to if ever the camera gives you trouble. I doubt you'll need that though. Pentax cameras are built to last. I have 4 fully manual and mechanical film SLR's that are still in tiptop condition and ready to use anytime I want to.

Pentax may have very limited digital lens models but that's because they hardly duplicate focal lengths. The best part is that Pentax is the only brand that can confidently say that all lenses made by them and for their cameras (third party) since the dawn of time can be used on any dSLR they have. The very old screwmount and medium format ones will simply need an adapter to fit. All lenses, even the old manual ones, will benefit from focus confirmation and Shake Reduction if the camera has it. If you consider all K-mount lenses and M42 lenses, that would be the largest collection of lenses in the secondhand market.

So, did you see what kind of pictures that K-30 guy got?

Pentax K5 is an awesome camera. The reason most people buy Nikon & Canon is for convenience. It's kind of like an iPod. You can get anything for an iPod in any electronics store, just as you can get Canon & Nikon accessories in any electronics store. There are other brands of mp3 player that are just as good as iPod, but stuff is harder to find for them. Pentax stuff, while available, is not everywhere like the other 2. I guess this is probably a result of what has already been mentioned, that is Canon & Nikon's mass marketing.
