Why is Nikon Superior to Canon?

I shoot Nikon, but I wouldn't say that Nikon is superior to Canon. Neither is Canon superior to Nikon. Each brand has advantages over the other in specific areas, but with each new model release, the balance sways back and forth.

Currently, Nikon has an edge of sensor performance in low light (sports), dynamic range (landscape), and color depth (portrait).

Nikon also (at least for now) has the superior flash system for advanced users.

Nikon (with their mid-level to pro bodies) can fully utilize all Nikon mount lenses from the 1960's to current day. Entry level Nikons can mount the earlier lenses, but need manual exposure and can only autofocus with AF-S or equivalent optics. Crop sensor lenses can be used on both DX and FX bodies. Canon abandoned their excellent FD lenses when they went autofocus, and all the lenses from the AE-1 era are now orphans. Canon's EF-S (crop sensor) lenses can't be used on full sensor cameras and require the user to replace all their lenses when upgrading.

Nikons traditionally have better "grip" designed into their bodies, making them easier for the novice to handle. They also have a solid reputation for reliability and ruggedness, as evidenced by them being the cameras of choice for NASA.

Canon's newer EF mount provides a larger mounting surface that give more "room" for lens designers to create fast, advanced lenses.

Canon seems to have the lead in video in DSLR use, as evidenced by the many Canon DSLR's I see being used to video news events.

Not being a Canon shooter, I can't give them their full due, but I hope a Canon user will fill in the blanks.

Here's a nice long discussion for your question.

Bottomline, neither is "superior" overall. What you need to decide is which camera is best for your type(s) of shooting and which fits your hands and style.

How do you know that it is?

It isn't - unless you're stupid.

I prefer Pentax to either, but I wouldn't degrade them - except for Nikon's L-series bridge cameras, they're utter dross.
