I tried some of the dslrs in the store and was thinking to buy d5200 after reading the reviews and all but why is it so slow in processing the image?
Was it due to the different mode or something or are nikon entry level dslrs just like that?

Hi get a grip low light conditions is why it takes time unless you use some sort of extra light source.a recharged battery would help too.

It could be slow because the demo model has had somebody mess up the settings. It could be slow because it is processing both RAW and high res JPEG files simultaneously. It could be slow because it has a very slow SD card in it. The D5200 does not have a reputation for being slow. It must have been something to do with the demo model.

I can't imagine the D5200 reasonably slow in processing images unless you took a shot in low light which should normally be the case with any dSLR out there.

Go back and try it again on Auto Mode.
If set to RAW or HDR it will take longer.
