Professionals don't just select a camera based on the specification of equipment they need a company that can support their business with the best customer service and care and knowing that a manufacturer offers an excellent product range to back up their chosen camera with reliable and well built accessories that can handle being used every day in different situations and just about any environment…

Professionals need to trust their cameras and the manufacturer that makes them… So reputation is important… The camera might only be a tool… It needs to be a decent one though… Because it's that tool that puts a photographers food on the table.

Enthusiast photographers don't have the same requirements as professionals and this is normally reflected in the level of investment an enthusiast will make when choosing their equipment… Cameras all do a similar job… The level of build quality and processors used in different grade cameras tend to be where manufacturers compromise to reduce the cost to a more affordable level… Canon and Nikon are probably used by more pro's than any other branded camera… This only means that both brands are trusted by pro's to produce and support equipment that they choose to use every day… Pentax and Sony also make cameras… Good Ones… And shouldn't be dismissed just because Canon and Nikon are the professionals choice… Pentax have a reputation for designing cameras for photographers by photographers and some enthusiasts prefer the Pentax option to either Canon, Nikon or Sony… You need to understand that there's a huge difference not only in price, between entry, enthusiast and professional level cameras… Build quality and specification is very different too.

Just because a camera has Canon or Nikon stamped on it does not make it a Pro camera… Pro cameras are used by people who can make a living from photography and get paid for creating quality images… And they aren't cheap.

1) Anyone who can't spell CANON isn't qualified to give an opinion.

2) Pros are traditionalists - A will use Canon because his father did, and his grandfather before him, B will use Nikon for the same reason.

You can't fit a knife-blade between them, but you'll never find one anyway, they're all stuck in various backs.

Frankly, it doesn't matter - I've used both, and prefer Pentax, others like Sony or Olympus. Everybody has a favourite, but only Canon and Nikon raise it to the level of worship, and it's not as if ANY camera will magically transform you into a photographer.

If YOU can't see beyond Canon and Nikon, and really think one is better than the other, save your money. You aren't ready for a DSLR.

I shoot a lot of sports and for sports or action photography, nothing beats the Canon 1DX.

If I were a landscape photographer, I'd likely go with a Nikon D4s.

It really depends on what you plan to do with your camera. Each has it's own strengths.
That said, the Nikon D4s would be a great camera for shooting sports and action and the Canon 1DX would be a great camera for landscape photography. Neither of these cameras are going to perform poorly in any category.
