Which Nikon is best for a beginner photographer?

I'm looking to buy a new Nikon. I'm still deciding on my price range, but if there's a good one out there under $500 that would be awesome! I would like something with good quality and a fast shutter, as i plan on taking speed pictures. Also, can anyone give me the pros and cons of point and shoot vs. DSLR? So what camera do you have, why do you like it, and would you recommend it? And what would be the best one for me?

If you do not have lenses - consider looking at costco for a Nikon kit. Pick the best Nikon camera you can afford.

Pros of point and shoot - size and weight.

Cons of point and shoot - small sensor = lower image quality, particularly at high-ISO/low-light levels

Advantages of DSLR - large sensor = high image quality. Choice of lenses, flashes and accessories. Better quality glass for better image quality.

Disadvantages of DSLR = increased weight and size.

Advantages of "bridge" camera - none.

Disadvantages of a "bridge" camera" - you get the increased size and weight of a DSLR but the low quality sensor and glass of a compact.

For $500 you are looking at the D3100, which is a good camera capable of giving you great images.
Don't go for a cheap D3000 if you see one. That is previous generation. The D3100 is significantly better for very little extra money.

You can find the Nikon D3100 for about $450 at this time. That will be your best bet.

What Martin said is accurate. Look on ebay for dslr deals. I paid the full price at best buy for my t3i with kit lenses. My brother found the the t4i with lenses for $300 less on ebay. If you want to get into photography, go with a dslr. I have no regrets.
