Nikon D3100 is now under $500. They don't sell cannons in this area.

Canon's (please note spelling) & Nikon's are not the only DSLR's on the market. Have you looked at the brands? Have you taken notes as to what you like when handing each camera? Have you considered other great brands like Pentax? But I must admit that Canon & Nikon do cater to "affordable" more than most. On my camera (Pentax) I like it's smaller size than Canon & Nikon. I like the 18-50mm lens and added their 50-200 lens which is just a tad bit larger than the 18-50mm. I do not like the idea of not using the 18-50mm lens and going out and buying an 18-200mm lens, the outfit becomes just too heavy to carry around the neck for any length of time.

In your shoes, I'd seriously consider the Pentax K-r and Sony A-37, at least until you learn to spell, 'CANON.'

Find a dealer and discuss your needs and budget, before handling a couple of alternatives.

A cannon is a weapon of war… A Canon is a camera.

I'd recommend the Canon t3 = $500 or so.

Based on sales and reviews the Canon EOS Rebel T3i might be what you are looking for. I always read reviews before I buy anything. The Canon EOS Rebel T3i has a lot of features but still very affordable. It will take fantastic pictures too.

Here is a review of the T3i plus some specs and online bargains. Check it out.
