What SD card should I use for my new T3 Canon?

I just bought a Canon T3 and a new SD card that had a crack in it, I found an old card that I used in a point and shoot Nikon, I keep getting the reinsert/change card or format it with the camera. When I tried to format it I got an error message. Should I go buy a new SD card?

Take it to Office Depot. They have all of them (SD)

If the new card has a crack in it, return it for a new one.
The old SD card should work fine unless it too is damaged.
If you plan on shooting any video, buy a Class 10 card

Class 10, i use a 16gb for.pictures and hd video.
