There's an adapter (not yet available) which will allow you to use Nikkor AF-S lenses

Currently only the 8 lenses Nikon offers with the "1" lens mount.

PhotoAce; the FT-1 adapter has been available for 9 months, and I have one for my Nikon V1.

Only Nikon 1 lenses will directly mount on the Nikon J1. At this point, there are no aftermarket lenses available. You can however, manually focus the Nikon 1 lenses, via the camera, but the focus control is not all that great - at least not as good as just grabbing a DSLR lens and turning the focus ring.

To get maximum use out of your J1, I highly recommend purchasing the FT-1 adapter. If you do, you may have to update the firmware of the J1 to the latest version, depending when you bought it.

With the FT-1 adapter, you can mount any F-mount (AF or AF-S) lens to your camera. If you want autofocus, the lens must be AF-S, but you can also manually focus the lens. And if you mount AF lenses, you must autofocus the lens.

The only restriction to using AF-S lenses with autofocus is that you must use spot focusing, rather than matrix. Not a big deal to me.

I use my Nikon AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5~5.6 on my Nikon V1, and due to the smaller sensor, it gives me a 189-810mm equivalent focal length. Here is a photo of the setup:

Or I can also mount my Tokina 80-400mm if I don't mind manual focusing as this lens is equivalent to a Nikon AF lens - without focus motor. That gives me a whopping 216~1080mm equivalent.

When using these lenses, the quality is maintained, and the aperture is maintained as well (vs.a teleconverter wherein the aperture is reduced).

This is my "birding" setup. At such focal lengths, you all but need a tripod anyway, so whether you use autofocus or manual focus is not that significant. And while the CX format sensors (2.7x crop factor) are smaller than a DSLR (1 or 1.5x crop factor), they are a lot larger than compact cameras (5.6x crop factor).

So compared to a bridge camera, this setup is vastly superior.

But you need to buy the adapter.
