What is a CSC 10-30mm lens equivalent to of optical zoom in P&S camera?

I'm considering buying a Nikon J1 Compact system camera and it comes with a 10-30mm lens i looked on the nikon lens simulator and it doesn't look too bad. But i'm not sure if it will suffice for use at concerts (i do plan to take a few shots with it then put it away, for good quality memories!) i don't know anything about compact system camera's. Do they not have a normal zoom feature at all? Only relying on lenses to zoom in and out? If so i'm hoping 10-30mm lens will do the job i'm sat this far from the stage (i include a printscreen picture from a picture i took at last concert)

A 10-30mm lens is quite a wide angle lens and will probably give a view wider than the image you've linked.

You can't really compare this to a p&s camera. On a compact camera the zoom typically starts at 24 or 25mm focal length so the widest setting on the p&s camera is not that much wider than the zoomed setting on your 10-30 lens.

If you want to get a picture of what's happening on the stage you'll probably need something that zooms to 200mm ( about 8x on a p&s camera)

The 10 - 30mm lens appears to be a wide angle to normal (what would be a 50mm in 35 photography) They do offer a 30 - 110 mm zoom as optional.

The Nikon 1 has a 2.7 crop factor, so the 10-30mm lens would be equivalent to a 27~81mm in the 35mm format, which is a mild wide angle to mild telephoto zoom.

Most compact cameras have a 5.6 crop factor, so a 27-81mm lens in the 35mm format would be equivalent to a 4.8~14mm lens in the compact camera format.

In summary:

27-81mm in full frame format
10-30mm in the 2.7x format (Nikon 1)
4.8~14mm in the 5.6x format (compact camera)

When you look at the compact camera specs, both the 5.6x crop focal length and the 35mm equivalent focal length should both be listed.

And with the Nikon 1, you can buy the optional 30-110mm lens for $250 (or $100 in the two lens kit).

The 30-100mm lens is equivalent to a 82-297mm lens in the 35mm format, and a 4.8~53mm lens in the 5.6x compact camera format.

However, you can also add a Nikon FT-1 adapter which can use Nikon DSLR lenses. So an inexpensive 55-300mm Nikon telephoto lens (which is already in the 35mm format) is equivalent to a 148~810mm lens in the Nikon 1 format. And that would be equivalent to a 26~144mm lens in the compact camera format.

Just remember the crop factors and you can convert the lens from one format to the other.

Full frame DSLR = 1.0x
Nikon, Sony, Pentax cropped DSLR = 1.5x
Canon cropped DSLR = 1.6x
M4/3 cameras = 2.0x
Nikon1, Sony RX100 = 2.7x
Compact Cameras = 5.6x
SmartPhones= 14x

So if you want to compare a Nikon 1 to a Compact Camera…

Multiply the Nikon 1 lens focal length by 2.7 (to get the 35mm full frame equivalent).
Divide the 35mm full frame equivalent by 5.6 to get the Compact Camera focal length.

OR simply divide the Nikon 1 focal length by 2.07 to get the Compact Camera focal length. 2.07 is derived by 5.6 / 2.7 = 2.07
