I'm sure the birds don't care. Because it doesn't matter.

It actually doesn't really matter what brand you are using. Important thing is the lens. You need telephoto lenses for bird photography. Which both brands will offer really good lenses.

I have a number of friends who are birders and they have been using the Nikon D90 with the old AF 70-300 mm lens with great success.

One of them just upgraded to the Nikon D7200 and the new Nikkor AF-S 70-300 VR and could not be happier.

The husband of that birder is saving his pennies for the Nikkor AF-S 200-500 mm VR so he can get shots of the birds which have a shorter "scare radius" than others

I'd use my Pentax, but you need;

a) A long telephoto/zoom (300mm minimum).
b) The necessary skill.

If you think the brand matters (and only know two), you're nowhere near ready.

As everyone says, brand doesn't matter. Lens is everything. I like using a 500mm lens on an APS-C sized sensor.

It doesn't matter. Either will do an excellent job. Both brands are used by professional bird photographers all over the world. Of course, they use other brands as well.

One with a very long telephoto lens. If you're thinking dSLR, any will do as long as you also buy a very long telephoto lens - one with at least 300mm.
