* The colour depth produced by the sensor
* The dynamic range of the sensor
* The performance of the sensor at high ISO settings
* The speed and accuracy of the auto-focus
* The ability to use many different focal length lenses (lenses made by the camera maker are preferred - Nikon and Canon make well over 100 such lenses and there are also additional available lenses made by third party lens makers.
* The ability of the camera to produce excellent images on demand.

NONE of this makes any difference if the user of the camera does not know the fundamentals of photography and knows how to use the elements of design and composition to create brilliant images… This also includes understanding how to use light to make so, so images amazing. Nikon and Canon make a wide range and all of the models have PLENTY of pixels.

More important than just pixel count is the person using the camera. Study lighting and composition to build your skills. Forget megapixels. It only tells picture size. It has nothing to do with picture or camera quality.

If you are after a dSLR, all are good whatever brand you choose. If you want a simpler point-and-shoot camera, look at Fujifilm and Sony while not going below $150. If you want something that has lots of zoom, get from Fujifilm.
