Nikon SLR Cameras

What are some good software programmes for improving your photos?

I had a Nikon camera from 2008 to 2012 and it was really good but sometimes photos came out too dark and other times the colour of photos came out too pale. What software can you recommend to help fix this? I'd prefer something that would automatically fix the photos. And I don't mind paying if it's very good (but I'm not up for paying subscriptions, I just want a once off payment).
Thank you!

Added (1). I can't believe how rude some people are. Honestly I took about 1, 000 photos with the camera and sometimes I didn't have time to take good photos. I only want to fix maybe 15 out of 1, 000 photos. The question was about a software programme not how to use a camera which I no longer use. I really can't believe how rude some people are.

Plenty of free software more than capable of what you're looking for.

GIMP is probably the most powerful, but requires a steeper learning curve to get the most out of it.

For something simpler, try Paint.NET or Photoscape.

The best software for improving your photos is the software in that thing called your head.

Learn photography properly and then you will know how to expose shots properly so they don't come out dark or pale etc.

If photos come out too dark or too pale means you didn't set the exposure properly.

READ YOUR CAMERA USER MANUAL. It will tell you how to meter the scene properly.

Software is not required, just a brain, and an ability to learn how to use your camera.

And read this: Understanding Exposure: http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/...posure.htm

Post processing software doesn't make a bad picture good. It makes a good picture better.

If photos come out too dark or too bright, then 99 times out of 100 it's the fault of the person behind the lens and not the camera.

There are some things you can do with software, but changing bad technique or harsh light isn't one of them.

Here are some some popular software.
1. Photoshop
2. Photoshop Elements
3. Aperture
4. Lightroom
5. GIMP
6. NIK Software
7. Canon DPP
8. Capture One
9.etc.

You can do a LOT with Photoshop. You can use other software like Picasa to do some more automated adjustments, but the above software will give you much more control and options. I use to prefer doing my edits in Lightroom and Photoshop, but I've now tried to get my shots closer to the target in camera. Many people have their reasons for doing this. As for me, its to save time.
