Both Sony and Nikon produce excellent cameras, and Nikon sometimes uses Sony-made sensors in their digital cameras. However, a camera is much more than just its sensor, of course. You should also take into account ease-of-use, performance, weight etc. Nikon has a much longer history as a camera manufacturer, but a few years back Sony took over Minolta's much-respected camera branch, together with all their expertise and technology, so Sony and Nikon are on a par as far as technological know-how is concerned.
If you're a professional photographer you'd probably go for a Nikon because of their dominant position in the professional field. If you're an amateur of photo enthusiast, things become a bit more muddled because it's not a question of the 'better brand', but which camera model is the best for your purposes and fits your price bracket? Best advice I can give is to try out a number of cameras in a camera store, and see which one suits you best. Whichever brand or model you choose, you can't go wrong with either a Nikon or a Sony (or a Canon, Olympus or Pentax for that matter).

Nikon hands down! The next most popular is Canon. And then there's my favorite, Pentax. Pentax has it's "stabilization" feature built into the body of the camera, rather than each lens! Plus older Pentax lenses will work with your camera. I recently purchased a use micro lens for under $500 which as new costs $850.00! You can't do that with Canon or Nikon.
