Playback display options on Nikon d5200?

In the playback menu on my 5200 there's playback display options. I wanted to use highlights and I have used them before but turned them off. Now I want them on again and I know how to turn them on you check the box just as you would for any of the options then click ok. My problem is that it never actually works. At first I though maybe I just don't have any highlights so I tried overview and histogram and everything else and nothing shows up after I take a picture and I can't figure out why. If anyone knows how to fix this it would be great.

The highlights are not going to blink if you have exposed your images well or if the scenes you shoot do not contain a lot of dynamic range which would show up as overexposed highlights which would of course cause blinking in those ares of the scene.
