The Nikon D5200 with the 18-105mm lens is a great combo. You can buy it most anywhere, such as
http://www.amazon.com/...00AXTQRSC/
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/...amera.html
http://www.adorama.com/...0K1F7.html
http://www.beachcamera.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=NKD5200KT18105

And probably Best Buy and WalMart.

Nikon or Canon is a matter of preference. Generally though, Nikon exceeds Canon in low-light capability as they have 10% larger sensors, and depending on the model, Nikon usually has lower shutter delays than Canon. This is from testing by http://www.imaging-resource.com/

The 18-105mm lens is a good starter lens and is a lot better than the 18-55mm that comes with most camera "kits".It will get you by until you figure out what other lenses you want.

Another popular option is to buy the Nikon D5200 with a 2-lens kit, which includes the 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses. This kit is assembled by Nikon and generally includes a deep discount for the second lens.

At any rate, no matter what lenses you buy up front, you will likely be adding to them at some point. Don't worry now about what ones to get (if any), you will figure that out as you use your camera.

Another option I like is to buy the camera just as a body only, and buy the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8, or Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8. Both of these lenses are professional-grade, and are a lot better than the 18-55mm the kit camera has.

So many options…
