I'm looking for a zoom lens for a very small wedding. I have a Nikon D7100 with the kits lens 18-105mm. I also have two prime lenses 35mm 1.8 and the 50mm 1.8. I was looking at the Tamrom 28-75mm 2.8 but the reviews are with all scattered opinions…

Has anyone really tried it out? Is it very noisy? Slow to focus? Good in low light? Sharp images?

Suggestions on any other lens suggestions that won't break the bank?

For weddings, I would buy the Nikon 85mm f/1.8 to go with your 35mm f/1.8 and 50mm f/1.8 lenses.

I don't really have wedding photography experience. However, I think you are probably going to have situations in which you want wider than 28mm on a DX sensor (equivalent to 42mm on FX). I think you are squandering your money on an FX lens when there are good DX choices available. I would consider the Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.0 DC HSM OS.

BTW, have you scouted out the location? If the ceiling is white and not too high, maybe bounce flash would work with your 18-105mm.

Weddings. Ouch painful

There's a reason why it is called one of the harder types of photography. But sometimes the people can only ask friends to do the foto's. Not everybody can pay for a pro photographers its true!

The problem I have here is time. He long do you have before the wedding. You need to be able to trust your tools and know how to use them well. Buying a lens 2 weeks before a marriage is really going to be a bad timing.

But lets say you have enough time to actually learn how to use the given lens. Then the 28-75mm is not a bad option. I got it and though not perfect. It certainly will be a fine effective 42mm-105mm lens. So very useful in many situations. It will lack width though. The 28-75mm is more suited for full frames but you can use it on your 7100.

The 35mm awesome. The 50mm again awesome. Having something that does effective between 80 and 120mm would be nice yes. Nice for portraits.

The kitlens, well it will do. Not joking it isn't pro quality not but it will do and if you don't have enough width on the other lenses [think group shots] then the 18mm of the 18-105 is what you have to work with.

A Tamron 17-50mm is a nice addition to lenses you can use. Because it is both wide and has a great f2.8 aperture. I got one of those. And maybe you can even rent something like 17-50mm F2.8 for the wedding. That way you don't have to buy one yet.

It really depends on what you are going to shoot and how.

Also think about getting a flash. One with a nice swivel head so you can bounce the flash on the ceiling. It so improves your flash photography that I'm not joking even a 120 dollar Metz Flash will so improve thing.

Also think about enough batteries. Memory cards. At least an extra fully charged battery and of course 2 memory cards. You just don't know if you need it. And on a wedding you really actually would want a second camera. For if the first breaks. But that is probably out of your budget.

Maybe you can rent one of those 24-70 F2.8's from Nikon self. That is what the pro's use! But being not full frame [the d7100] you will use it as an 36-105. And second having pro tools is one thing. Knowing how to use them is a second thing.

So whatever you are going to do try to get some experience with the tools you are going to use on the wedding. And think about that 17-50mm from tamron. The 28-75mm is awesome to. Check if you can't RENT them. If you can't rent them maybe rent the 24-70mm Nikkor. Good lens.

Do you have a tripod by the way?
