I have linked an example of how knowing the sport and the team can lead to more interesting sports shots. As you can guess, timing of your shot as well as its composition is critical. Do not expect to be creating brilliant sports photography without a whole lot of experience.

EDIT: You will of course need a telephoto lens for most sports
