First:

Did you insert an SD card in your camera?
Did you format the card before you attempted to use it?

You need to spend more time reading your user manual. All this and more is in the manual.

What you need are two or three 4 gb SDHC cards, Class 10 Do NOT be tempted to by larger cards. You need to copy all the image files to your computer at the end of each day and larger cards make people lazy and they don't do that. Eventually this can cause card corruption.

You can find the best prices on Amazon.

If the camera is defective, the vendor should replace the camera. If it is beyond the limitation of the vendor, Nikon will work with you to solve the problem, including replacing the camera. This happens, don't take it personally.

It just sounds like a bad card.
The camera is telling you what the problem is.
If the camera was the problem it would probably not give any message.
If you steeped on the card or hit it or something that could have damaged it.
Memory cards are quite easy to brake.
Make sure it is compatible with your camera.
I highly doubt that it is a compatibly problem though.
Read your camera's manual.
That should tell you most of what you need to know.
It is probably just a bad card.
Just buy another one and you should be good.
I would recommend an 8-16Gb card.
The really big card can be unstable.
Make sure the lock on the card is not on.
The camera may be confused because the lock is set.
Make sure you have a memory card in the camera.
The memory card may just be scrambled.
Also format the card first on the camera
If that does not work do it on the computer.
I believe your camera just told you what it is.
A damaged memory card.
