I have a Nikon DSLR D7000 camera with a 18 - 105 lens. I'm looking for a zoom lens to go with what I have at the moment. I'm looking at the above lens and wonder if anyone could shed some light on the performance of this lens.

It's a popular lens. Here you can find an in-depth review and customer ratings:

It's actually a pretty decent lens. Especially that you can sometimes get them factory refurbished for less than $400.

I own both the Nikon AF-S 70-300 f/4.5~5.6 and AF 80-200 f/2.8. I use the 80-200 for most sports, but use the 70-300 if I need a bit more reach and faster focusing.

This version of the Nikkor 70-300mm is currently the best in class, it's sharp, focuses quickly, and has full time manual override, however it is really limited to outdoor work because of it's slow maximum aperture. In the price bracket, I don't think you'll find much else if you need long reach.

And BTW your 18-105mm is also a zoom lens.

Specs seem great and performance will all be up to you.

It's a decent lens, for sure. It feels good. I have used it to shoot auto an motorcycle races as well as birds in flight, so the auto-focus is plenty fast enough.
