My nikon j1 won't let me use interval timer shooting?

I have a Nikon j1 and when I go to the menu I can see the interval timer shooting mode but it won't let me click on it, its kinda faded out cuz I can't use it. I don't know how to fix this. Someone said to put it in manual mode but I don't know how. Please help, its really annoying because other menu options aren't available as well.

If you stick to the subject programmes, a whole slew of features will be greyed out, because the camera thinks you lack the skill and experience to use them. If you can't put the thing in Manual mode, it may have a point.

May I suggest you READ THE *********** MANUAL!

Normally when menu items are grayed out like that they're not available on that particular camera.

Andrew told you what you need to know. Read the manual!
Another idea would be to sell it and buy a real camera like the D3100.

I'm always amazed that some responders go to great lengths to tell you to read the manual, but can't be bothered to just answer the question.

The menu items are greyed out because you are in Auto/Scene mode. So first, you have to go into the menu and select "EXPOSURE MODE" then select P (programmed auto), S (shutter-priority auto), A (aperture-priority auto), or M (Manual).

I confirmed this with my Nikon V1, which should have a similar menu to your J1.

If you have never used these modes before, start out with P, which is sort of like auto, but lets you make more decisions.

Don't use manual unless you have gained enough knowledge on how to use it. But Interval Timer Shooting is available in any of the P, S, A, M modes, so start with P mode.

Read the manual.

Some options only become available under certain shooting modes.
