I'd use a portrait lens.

Try the Nikkor AF-S 85mm f1.4G.

The AF-S Micro Nikkor 60mm f2.8 will serve as both macro lens and portrait lens.

Thankyoumaskedman has a good idea.

What you also need are some good light… At least three. A key, fill and rim light and a good understanding of how to use them

You choose a fcoal length that puts you in a comfortable distance from your subject. The standard focal length is usually a good starting point avoiding wide angle due to the distortion they bring. With the D5100, a 35mm will put you within kissing distance to your subject. Some photographers love to be that close. Me, no. I'm more of a short-telephoto shooter with a 50mm where I can still manage to give instructions within whispering distance. To some, that is still unacceptable, that is why they go for a mid-telephoto lens like the 85mm. This also gives them the advantage of using more natural light to work with.
