I'm buying my first dslr (i've had regular digital cameras in the past, all were canon). I need a little help finding a good one. You should know:
it would be used for mostly posed pictures of people and nature, extensive yet simple focus options would be nice. Also some candids/action shots.a little bit of everything, really. Also, it must have video recording, and be under $600.although i've been with canon my whole life, i'd be willing to switch, but ONLY to nikon. Which company is better (especially in terms of customer service? Canon wasn't fantastic in that area.overall, any suggestions would be great.

You should stick to canon. Canon makes good entry level DSLR's anyways. The camera you need to start with is either the canon t3 or t2i, they are cheap and preform very well. Both of these will get you started in the DSLR game, and will last you a good solid 4-5 years. And then you can upgrade your body and keep the lens. Both of these can shoot FULL HD video. Nikon doesn't make very good entry level DSLR's, they are good for photo, but video can't be compared to canon's.

I found these offers on amazon, they are both under your budget:

These cameras might be old, but they are very reliable and still have modern technology built in them.

Hope this helps, Good Luck

I would go with a Nikon D5100 or D5200. The Entry-level Canon DSLRs have problems when shooting videos if there's a bunch of lines in the picture, such as someone with a striped shirt. I forget what it's called but it doesn't happen on Nikons. Besides that they're basically the same (Canon and Nikon). The quality of your picture is going to depend on your lens. The lens that comes with these cameras aren't that great, so you're going to need to upgrade.
