AF-S NIKKOR G ED N

How would you rate the super wide Nikon 14-24mm?
I have never seen or used one but am aware of some pros and cons. No VR, heavy and bulky and expensive specialist filter adapter.
However, does the super wide angle and Image Quality make it worthwhile investment for Nikon 700 and D810 owners who shoot landscape?
I value your thoughts and experience.

The 14-24 mm f/2.8 is one of the sharpest lenses made.

Advanced amateurs and pros know that VR is NOT needed on lenses shorter than about 100 mm because they know how to hold and support a camera and lens to reduce the possibility of cameras movement during exposure.

ANY zoom lens with a constant aperture of f/2.8 is going to be heavy… It just comes with the territory.

If you do not want to drop the money necessary to buy the lens, consider renting one first to see if it does what you want it to do.

I have two colleagues who use that lens for shooting landscapes and architecture. Once uses his on a Nikon D3x and the other on a Nikon D810.

Well, if you want your 36 glorious megapixels to look gloriously sharp, the thing to have is a tripod. If weight and bulk bother you, maybe FX isn't for you.
Is 14-24mm the range you will love to have for landscapes, like so many gush? Well, it will do the kind of thing that your 28mm does, but more so. It makes the close look distant and the distant look much more distant, creating foregrounds that loom large with backgrounds whose details are tiny. Fine for some situations and compositions, and not for others.

Great for landscapes and other wide angle shots which can also be useful even in relatively low light like during sunrise and sunset. Don't worry about no VR. It doesn't count much in wide angle. If you shoot landscapes regularly, the 14mm end would add a significant amount of area as compared to the 18mm end of the kit lens.

Picture quality? It's all up to you and what you can do with the lens. Be aware that most wide angle lenses tend to distort straight lines at the edges. Most wide angle lenses also are rather soft on the edges. That's where shooting at the widest angle you can afford comes in. You can crop the picture to leave out the blurry parts and still have a significant panorama with you.
