Should I teturn my Tokina Superwide for a 18-200mm Nikkor?

So, I got my Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X116 Pro DX II, and while I'm thrilled to have a new lens to play with, I didn't anticipate how "super" this wide angle lens is.

I'm a fledgling photographer who has only had a 35mm f/1.8 prime until now, so this Tokina is just miles different. I know I'll just need more practice with it, but considering I mostly take pictures of people in indoor settings, I'm strongly reevaluating my need for this.

Instead, I'm looking to get the Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S ED VR II for my D5200.

Thoughts? Tips?

If you are looking for a versatile lens, you might be better off with the Nikon 18-140mm. Although the range of the 18-200mm seems more impressive, the compromises in sharpness may be too noticeable at 24 MP.

I own both the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 and the Nikon 18-200mm.

But as you found out, the 11-16mm is somewhat of a specialized lens and if you have no need for a superwide, it is not as useful. However, before giving up on it, try extreme close ups. It will result in some perspective distortion, but the notion most people have is superwide angles need to be used for landscapes, when on the contrary, some interesting results can be had when using such a lens close up.

Actually though, I'd also consider the 18-200mm a specialty lens too - as a vacation lens.

The 18-200 is a super telephoto and is not a very good performer under f/8. At f/8 it is pretty good, but that pretty much restricts it to a daylight lens. For vacation, when used mostly outside, the compromise of using the lens at f/8 vs. Having a single lens to take on vacation makes it useful for that purpose… But I don't use that lens for much else.

If you are looking at indoor photography, you may want to consider the Sigma 17-50mm f/12.8. I actually own this lens as well. I use this lens perhaps 60% or more as it is my "normal" lens and most of my photography needs are fulfilled with this lens.

But if I were to select one of my lenses for indoors and people, it would probably be my 50mm f/1.4 due to it's superior low light capability.
