I was given a Nikon EM 35MM camera without lens and wanted to know if a nikon af nikkor 28-85 lens would work for it? I'm a newbie and just want to make sure.

Only if it has an aperture ring - you won't get autofocus either way.

Nikon badly miscalculated the market with the EM, which was literally designed as a, 'Ladies' Camera,' an SLR that was simple to use (Aperture priority only, hence the need for an aperture ring on any lens you want to use). Unsurprisingly, women who wanted SLRs not only avoided the EM, but weren't too happy with Nikon either.

You'll find all the manual focus lenses you'll ever need on the used market at silly prices, just look for Nikon or third-party lenses in Nikon AI fit (AIS lenses also fit, but the extra linkages are redundant on the EM).

Check too that the lens you're buying is for film or full-frame (FX), not for crop sensor (DX) dSLR's. If you get a crop sensor lens, the resulting picture will be small (not fill up the whole film frame) and will have a large, dark and ugly border around it.

If you find one in good condition, it should be a good choice for your film camera.
