Nikkor AF-S 55-300mm Lens Barrel?

I just got a Nikon Nikkor 55-300mm AF-S 4.5-5.6G ED lens and have a question regarding the zoom ring. When zooming between 55 & 100 it is fluid and easy to zoom, however between 100 & 300 it gets stiffer to turn (while not unbearable). I was just curious if it was normal for this to be the case or if it will work out with use.

All zoom lenses are like that, to some extent. It depends on the way the lens is structured, eg. The design of the mechanism which converts the twisting motion of the ring into the forward/backward motion of the lens elements inside the barrel.

Some lenses are stiff when they're new, and then loosen up with use. Other lenses get stiffer with age. You don't say whether yours is new or 2nd hand, so can't say which of these applies to you.

It could also be that there's internal damage to the mechanism, so if it's a new lens and doesn't seem to get better after a bit of use, you may want to have it looked at under warranty.
