Nikkor 85mm 1.4 AF vs AF-s Lens?
I'm looking to buy an 85mm 1.4 lens for portraits, but I will also be using it for indoor sports so I need a fast and accurate auto focus. The AF is about $500 cheaper than the AF-s. I don't have any experience with the standard AF lenses. If anyone has experience with both of these lenses I would appreciate any feedback concerning the auto focus speed and accuracy, as well as an overall image quality comparison.
It depends what body you are putting it on.
If it's a D5XXX or D3XXX it will not autofocus at all, it's manual focus only (these camera bodies have no focus motor).
Any body above the entry level models will autofocus using the camera's focus motor and it will be very quick. The accuracy depends on what focus points you are using. I only ever use single point centre focus.
Only Nikon AF-S lenses will auto focus on their lower level DSLR bodies - D3100, D3200, D3300, D5100, D5200, D53000.
AF-S lenses are faster and more accurate in the auto-focus mode than an older Nikkor AF lens.
As time goes by, most of the older Nikkor AF lenses will be replaced by AF-S lenses.
What you have done is bought into an expensive hobby and are now trying to go cheap on your purchases. Do what most of us do, save you pennies until you can buy the lens you need and until then, spend your time honing your skills as a photographer
