Best budget 50mm lens for Nikon D5200?

I'm looking into getting a 50mm lens for some portrait photography.

Looking at the "Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D" but have read that the focal goes to around 75mm on my make of camera body.

Could anyone recommend a good reasonably priced 50mm with a good wide aperture please.

A 50mm on your camera is equivalent to the angle of view you would get with a 75mm on a full frame camera. 75mm is almost perfect for portraits.

That's not a disadvantage, it's a distinct advantage if you are shooting portraits. A 50mm would be too wide for a portrait lens on a full frame camera, but is perfect for a cropped sensor camera like yours

If you want to be able to autofocus you will need to buy the AF-S version for your camera: Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Lens - the other lens you mentioned is manual focus only on your camera.
