Nikon SLR Cameras

Is getting a old slr worth it?

I'm currently looking at the Canon AE-1 and the Nikon FM. I'm 17 and used to use old film cameras when I was a kid up to when I was 13. I loved using those cameras and they were great. The only camera I use now is a point and shoot by Canon and I love adjusting the settings on it to get a good picture. Would it be worth it to get one of these old cameras. I only have a $200 budget and these cameras seem great. I could probably get them much cheaper on Ebay too. Would they be ideal for taking pictures outside or for learning how to use a slr? I plan on getting the pictures on a Dvd so I can upload them to my computer too.

Yes - its worth it if you want to have a play around with 35mm film again.

You should be able to get cheaper than those links on eBay - check seller feedback though & that the camera is in working order (light seals ok, aperture blades not sticking, shutter not sticking etc).

They'll be fine for learning (or re-learning, seeing as you said you'd used cameras like these before) to use an SLR.

35mm film (both B&W and colour) is easy to come by, negatives can be developed & scanned to digital files at reasonable cost. If you shoot B&W there's no reason why you can't develop them yourself (you don't need a darkroom).

They are good; do they offer a warranty?

Absolutely it is worth it. I suggest you browse these pages before buying from an unknown source on Amazon or Ebay.

In my opinion, the absolute best source for used equipment is KEH. I have bought LOTS of gear from them, never a problem, and the equipment is typically much better than they rate it to be. The "good" or even "bargain" items can often be terrific.
