I'm buying a Nikon D810 today, need advice on which lens to get with it?

I'm purchasing a D810 camera, having never owned a DSLR in the past.
Anyway, I need a camera for my graduation next month, so I need advice on which will be best.

Main priority is that I get something good. Second priority is that it isn't too expensive.
Open to ideas and suggestions.

The Nikkor 24-120mm kit lens is an excellent place to start. Then see where your interests take you.

As the Nikon D810 is £2500+ I assume your idea of "not expensive" is in the region of £1000

So something like the 24-70 f/2.8

Serious about learning photography? Get the lowest f/numbered 50mm you can afford. F/1.8 is good enough already.

Want to start shooting a wide variety of shots right away? Get the 35-75mm or 28-80mm zoom lens for more flexibility.

Because the D810 has such a high resolution, you will need to stick with a certain set of lenses that come as close as possible to the resolving power of the sensor.

Various review sites publish a list of recommended lenses for the D810:

I would highly recommend that you go to http://www.photozone.de/...e/nikon_ff and check out the reviews. Many of these "recommended lens" lists only show lenses made by Nikon. However, there are plenty of lenses from 3rd parties such as Zeiss, Sigma, and Tamron that are either sharper or are almost as sharp but just a fraction of the price. Photozone can help you decide if spending an extra $1,000 for a 10% increase in optical quality is worth it or not.

I agree with the idea of you buying the 24-70 mm f/2.8 lens as your first lens.

With it you can shoot some very nice landscapes (see link below) as well as nice portraits with it and everything in between.

To get the best performance from your D810, shoot in RAW and process your RAW images using Lightroom CC

The next lenses to consider are a 70-200 mm f/2.8 and either an 85 mm or 105 mm prime for shooting portraits
