Set the focus selector on the lens mount of the camera body from M to AF.

Be sure that whatever lens you have mounted to the camera is also set to AF and not M.

There are numerous other functions that go along with auto focus that you'll need to familiarize yourself with, also by reading the manual. They are too numerous and nuanced to explain here.

I hope that this information is useful and you'll remember to choose a best answer!

As Johnny has mentioned, you must make sure that both the camera and lens are set to auto-focus

When shooting sports or any other action, you can use the "AF-On" button to continuously keep the lens in focus during plays. This is a good time to use your thumb on the AF-On button and your finger on the shutter release button
