How to know if my camera is brand new?

I bought a Nikon D610 from Amazon, it had smudge marks (hand prints) on the camera and all accessories were not in original packages, so I returned it for a replacement. The replacement came in, still has smudge marks but all the accessories are in original packages. I wonder if the smudge marks are by the inspectors or my camera was actually used.

Is there a way to find out?

If you have an "un-delete" function or software, you could see if there were any (deleted) pictures in memory.

Take a small JPEG image and upload it here: http://nikonshuttercount.com/
If the shutter count is more than a few test shots then you will know it has been used.

Inspectors and quality control personnel in the factory use gloves. Your camera should have that fresh new-camera smell out of the box just like how a new car does the first time you enter it.

Check the shutter actuation count. There are free software (Opanda?) to do it. A couple of hundreds or so is quite normal. I've heard of a Nikon coming out of a sealed box with 500. Anything above 1000 is suspicious. More than 2000 is definitely used.

This is one reason I always recommend to buy from a reputable store nearest you.
