How do I get the flash to pop up /open on a Nikon D3100?

Have you looked in the user manual?

There's a little button on the side of the flashes location you can press. It is called the Flash Mode Button You can see that on page 2

Since most people that shoot with a dSLR, do not use a flash unless they are shooting events and then they use a dedicated external flash like the Nikon SB700.

I use my flash about 5% of the time. That means that I use the available lighting where ever I'm shooting

1. Get out of auto mode.
2.depress the button on the size of the pentaprisim. Look at your manual if you are not sure where it is.

Thing is, if you are in auto mode, the camera controls the use of the flash. Only when you go to the PSAM modes can you control the flash - it is considered advanced operation I guess.
