How to film a concert on a dslr?

I have a Nikon d5300 camera, and would love to film concerts on it. I was recently at a small concert this past weekend, and taped the whole thing. The video and sound quality was amazing, a little too amazing. The camera picked up all the sounds of the audience singing along to the point where you could barely hear the singer. I'm going to a Lana Del Rey concert later this month that will have thousands of people in the audience, and a Marina and the Diamonds concert where I will be in the very front of the venue; is there any way to get good sound on the recordings without the audience noises ruining the video?

Your camera has an external microphone jack, into which you can plug something like a "shotgun" mic, which would provide more directional pickup, and reduce (not eliminate) crowd noise.

BTW, you should check to see if the upcoming concerts allow DSLR cameras such as your Nikon. Many don't.

Set camera on a tripod and set to video mode. Press the button the start recording and press again to stop. If you want better, get a digital camcorder but if go with a cheap one, results won't improve much (only recording time and autofocus will).

There's a couple of ways to do what you really want to do, though I'm in two minds about going into the details.

First up, there's a reason why many venues don't allow DLSRs into gigs. It less to do with copyright control than it is to do with idiots with cameras spoiling the gig for everyone else!

So you ve got your camera in, you have permission, and you are out of the way of the audience! The best way to get better audio yourself if to use a direction mic on a separate device. You can also get the recording off the sound desk, and use that in your post production!

Once you have your video ready always let the group in question see it before you go posting it around. If you are taking still pictures at a gig then get them out there; this usually means writing reviews as well (everyone wants to take photos but no one wants to write reviews).
