Good camera for Nature/Outdoor photography?

I'm on a 500 dollar budget.

I need a good, light, portable camera that has good zoom and is good outdoors. I'm going to Costa Rica over Spring Break. I was thinking the Nikon J1, but it has bad zoom. I would prefer a compact system camera. Any suggestions?
