Getting a new lens, should I keep my prime?

I have a Nikon D5200 and the Nikorr 35mm f/1.8 AF-S prime lens. So far, it's been wonders for me. But I'm looking to get some new glass, and I'm taking a liking to the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X116 Pro DX II.

While my prime lens has served me well, I can't fit as much into the frame without having to take several steps back, and sometimes, that's not an option. The prime lens is the only lens I have as I got body only.

That said, as photography is more of an amateur hobby for me, I want to cut down costs as much as possible. Therefore, I'm considering selling my prime and just keeping the Tokina as my primary (and only) lens.

I would definitely keep the prime lens, primes are generally superior to zooms and that's quite a wide Tokina, it won't suit every situation. The more lenses you have, the more versatile you can be.

Definitely keep the prime. It covers a focal length that your wide angle Tokina won't and is a faster lens for low light work (the Tokina is fast too, but you'll get over a stop more light through the 35mm).

The 35mm prime has its limitations, but then again so does a superwide zoom.
There's a reason why kit lenses tend to run about 18-55mm for basic models or 18-105mm or 18-140mm for upgrade models. Wider than 18mm is very useful sometimes, but not very often.

It depends on your photography. If you only do very wide pictures and never use the prime then there's not much point in keeping it. Only keep a lens if you are actually going to make use of it, otherwise you may as well sell it and use the cash towards something that you are actually going to use.

Also consider the Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 lens. The f3.5 version is better than the cheaper f4-5.6 version and the increased range would be a lot more flexible than the 11-16mm of the Tokina.

The Tokina lens you are looking at only goes up to 16mm. Your prime lens is twice that so keep it for those occasions when you need it.
OR, consider getting a longer zoom such as 18 -55 (if Nikon make such a lens) which will give you a better range and you can then sell the 35mm prime.
