Would this lens work with my Nikon?

I own a nikon d3100 and am considering buying a new lens for an upcoming safari. So far I only have a 18-55mm.
I found this lens on ebay and don't understand why it is so cheap and why i would spend so much more money on another lens if this is 70-300mm.
am i missing something?

Yes it would work with your camera.

it's cheap because it is the old version without an image stabilizer. That'd be the "VR" feature of other Nikon lenses.

For a safari with lots of shots being taken in bright sunlight that won't be a problem. But in other lighting conditions, or under a cloudy sky, you will struggle to sustain sufficient shutter speeds for a steady shot without a tripod and without raising the ISO a lot.

The extra price for the version with VR is money well spent. I have both an unstabilized 70-300mm lens and a stabilized 55-200mm one, and i exclusively use the latter, even though it has a bit less reach.

The main problem with this lens is that although you can use it, it will not autofocus on the D3100. This is because the D3100 does not have a built in AF drive motor. This lens does not have a built in AF motor (non AF-s).

You would be better off with the newer AF-s VR version, unless you think you can manage manual focussing.

Take most note of Stephen's answer - no autofocus on D3100! Also no stabiliser as noted elsewhere. As with most things in life, you get what you pay for (or "don't pay for").
